Why I feed raw..

My name is Regina. I have been involved with dogs for over 20 years. However, in the last three plus years, I have made the switch to a raw diet for all of my dogs and cats. What I have witnessed over that time has convinced me that feeding an evolutionary diet is the single best thing I can do to enhance and sustain the overall health of all of my animals.

Prior to starting my animals on raw, my Irish Setter had chronic ear infections. I could count on writing a check for antibiotics and ear wash every time we went in for a check up. He also was prone to skin rashes. I was introduced to the concept of raw feeding by a breeder friend of mine. I researched the pros and cons and decided to give it a try, with no preconceived notions on what effect it might have on my pets. Rusty had been on raw for about 6 months before we had a vet check. As usual, I pulled out my checkbook to pay for the ear meds, only to be told that his ears looked absolutely perfect! I was stunned. In fact, he has not had another ear infection or ear problem of any kind since!

Several years ago, my dad became very ill. I made several trips across the country to visit and care for him and during that time I had to kennel my Irish Setter and Old English Sheepdog. I was unable to find a kennel that would feed them raw, so I opted for the best place I could find for my dogs and figured I would just have to put them back on their normal diet when I returned. During that time, Rusty developed pancreatitis. I had one very sick dog. I was advised to put him on a commercial prescription diet and give ample instructions on what he could and couldn’t have. After having thoroughly research raw diets before embarking on this course, I knew that I couldn’t in good conscience put him back on kibble. I did some more research , consulted with several raw feeders who knew a lot more than I did and adjusted his raw diet as directed. Today this healthy, happy 90 lb Irish Setter is far from the sickly dog I took to the vet just three years ago. He has completely recovered and has no restrictions on his diet.

In addition to my Irish Setter, who is now 8 years old, I also have an Old English Sheepdog who is 15, two Ragdoll cats ages 5 and 6, a British shorthair age 7 and a Maine Coon age 8 as well as a 2 year old Havanese, a 7 month old Havanese and my first raw bred and fed litter of puppies....five very healthy, very active little Havanese girls. I attribute the good health and overall condition of my animal companions to good genetics and especially a raw diet.
